Progress Brazilian Style
What exactly does ‘progress’ mean for the everyday lives of the people in developing countries?
‘Progress’ has come to the city of Salvador in Northern Brazil. For the last 5 years this famous Brazilian city has been undergoing a controversial ‘modernisation’ plan, forcing the people to accommodate the needs of modern tourism and commerce. Directed by Argentinean director Diego Haase (Native Voice Films) together with the collaboration of the Brazilian director Marcelo Matos and the production support of Daniela Martins, Progress Brazilian Style is an observational documentary following 3 citizens from Salvador. These citizens are both for and against ‘progress’ as represented by the embracing of tourism. The citizens represent those who believe their traditional community and cultural identity are under threat by these changes and those who are desperate for a positive ‘dollar injection’ that they believe will come with an influx of tourists.
