' A unique film' - In Camera

Facing Mara is an innovative film study of a leading soloist dancer
from the English Royal ballet.
This ambitious documentary combines three visual approaches, still
photography, documentary and two choreographed dances, contemporary and
classical. The theme of the work encapsulates the cycle of a day. The film
begins with the stillness and silence of a beautiful cinematic study of
the unconscious body to the awakening of movement from which emerges
sound, colour and dance.
A documentary is interjected into the choreographed work to give the
audience an insight into the training, routine and passions between
choreographer and dancer. As the film unfolds, the composer, choreographer
and dancer are all revealed in their creative processes, resulting in an
intensely human portrait of the artist at work.
The interweaving of documentary and dance finally returns to the darkness
and still drawings of the body - a dancer's day portrayed through film.
Facing Mara offers a revealing and human insight into how dance is created.
